Breaking Gender Stereotypes in Fragrance
Breaking Gender Stereotypes in Fragrance
For a long time, fragrance has been divided into two categories: “for men” and “for women.” Floral scents were often labeled feminine, while woody or spicy scents were marketed as masculine. But scent is so much more personal than that.
At Olfactory NYC, we believe fragrance should be about self-expression, not outdated gender stereotypes. Every scent at Olfactory is unisex, because the best fragrance is the one that feels like you.
Why Are Fragrances Gendered?
The idea of gendered fragrance mostly comes from marketing. Over time, certain notes became associated with certain genders. Rose, vanilla, jasmine, and powdery notes were often placed in women’s fragrances, while cedarwood, musk, leather, spice, and amber were often placed in men’s fragrances.
But the truth is, fragrance notes do not have a gender. A rose can smell fresh, deep, romantic, or earthy. Vanilla can feel cozy, smoky, warm, or clean. Woods can be soft and creamy, while florals can be bold and powerful.
It all depends on how the scent is blended and how it wears on your skin.
Fun Fact: “Perfume” and “Cologne” Are Not Gendered
Perfume and cologne are often used like gendered words, but they are really about fragrance concentration, not who the scent is for.
Traditionally, cologne refers to a lighter fragrance formula with a lower concentration of fragrance oil. Perfume, or eau de parfum, usually has a higher concentration of fragrance oil, which can make it last longer and feel more noticeable.
But today, many products marketed as “cologne” are actually eau de parfums or perfume-strength formulas. The word “cologne” is often used as a marketing term for men’s fragrance, even when the formula itself is not technically a cologne.
At the end of the day, the formula is not gendered. A scent can be light, strong, fresh, woody, floral, sweet, or spicy, but that does not make it “for” one gender. Fragrance is personal, and anyone can wear any scent they love.
Fragrance Is Personal, Not Gendered
Choosing a fragrance should be about what you like, how you want to feel, and the mood you want your scent to create, not what you are “supposed” to wear.
At Olfactory NYC, every core fragrance and custom blend is designed to be worn by anyone. Our scents are not separated into “men’s fragrance” and “women’s fragrance” because scent should be personal. Whether you are drawn to fresh, floral, woody, gourmand, musky, citrus, spicy, or earthy notes, you can create something that fits your taste without being limited by a label.
That is the beauty of custom fragrance. You are not choosing from a category made for you. You are creating something with you in mind.
Rethinking “Masculine” and “Feminine” Notes
A lot of people still use words like masculine and feminine to describe scent, but those words do not have to be rules. They can simply be part of how a fragrance feels.
For example, a woody scent might feel warm, grounded, smoky, or clean. A floral scent might feel soft, fresh, bold, green, or romantic. A gourmand scent might feel cozy, creamy, sweet, or playful. A citrus scent might feel bright, crisp, polished, or energetic.
Instead of asking whether a scent is masculine or feminine, try asking:
Does this scent feel fresh or warm?
Does it feel soft or bold?
Does it feel clean, sweet, woody, floral, spicy, or cozy?
Does it feel like me?
Those questions make fragrance feel more personal and more fun.
How to Find a Scent That Feels Like You
You do not need to know every note, fragrance family, or perfume term before creating a custom scent. Whether you come in with a clear idea or no idea at all, your scentologist will guide you through the process.
You can share the notes you love, the scents you usually wear, the mood you want to create, or even just how you want the fragrance to feel. From there, your scentologist will help you explore different scent families and build a custom fragrance that feels like you.
Custom Fragrance Without the Labels
Breaking gender stereotypes in fragrance starts with giving yourself permission to wear what you love. You do not have to choose a scent based on what is traditionally marketed to you. You can choose based on your taste, your mood, your memories, and the way a fragrance makes you feel.
At Olfactory NYC, all scents are unisex and fully customizable. Whether your perfect scent is floral, woody, fresh, sweet, spicy, musky, or something completely unexpected, it belongs to you.
Because fragrance does not need a gender. It just needs to feel right.
