How to Make Your Fragrance Last All Day Long

How to Make Your Fragrance Last All Day Long

If you're anything like us, spritzing your signature scent feels like second nature. Creating your custom fragrance is a fantastic way to add a finishing touch to the perfect outfit or leave a lasting impression on those around you. Nothing is better than someone exclaiming, "Oh my gosh, what perfume are you wearing?!" We don't think so, unless it can respond, "Thanks, it's custom!" We've compiled some essential tips to help you maximize your fragrance all day.

Start With a Strong Base

Prep your skin before applying your scent! We recommend starting with your scent in the matching body wash and lotion. Well-moisturized and clean skin prevents the fragrance from evaporating too quickly. Adore your fragrance and looking to expand it into other aspects of your routine? You can now order your custom scent in a body wash, lotion, or diffuser.

 Spray Pulse Points

What exactly is a pulse point? Pulse points are areas on the body where blood vessels are close to the skin's surface. The natural warmth emitted from pulse points helps activate the scent and lift the fragrance notes off your body. Try spritzing your scent on a few of these areas for maximum impact:

  • Inside your wrists
  • Behind your ears
  • Inside your elbows
  • Behind your knees
  • Near your belly button

If you've ever seen someone apply perfume to their wrists, chances are they immediately rub them together right after spritzing. However, this damages the scent and affects the way it settles on the skin! Rubbing fragrance on the skin can destroy the top notes of a scent, changing it entirely. Instead, allow the scent to dry down on its own and slowly settle into your skin.

Apply on Clothes and Hair (With Caution)

You can also add a splash of your scent to your clothes and hair—just do it carefully. A general rule with clothing is that if you can wash the item in the machine, giving it a light spritz is fine. Avoid spraying delicate fabrics such as silk, which is easily damaged by the oil and alcohol in perfume. If you apply to your hair, do so sparingly—the alcohol will dry out your strands.

Layer Different Scents

Experiment by combining different perfumes or types of scented products. Layering fragrances is a great way to change your scent based on the season, your mood, or even the time of day. This will strengthen the projection of your fragrance and make it last even longer. Play around with layering with our Moodsets available here.

Reapply As Needed, But Don't Overdo It

Remember—much of your favorite scent's lasting power comes down to its concentration! An eau de toilette lasts only a couple of hours, whereas an eau de parfum lasts around 6-8 hours. All Olfactory NYC fragrances are on the higher end of eau de parfums, so you can confidently enjoy your scent all day long. Feel free to add a second spritz midday, but keep in mind that you'll become less sensitive to your scent over time. Your fragrance is still strong to those around you, even if you've gone nose blind to it.

Care for Your Fragrance

When you aren't spritzing away, you can extend the lifetime of your fragrance by keeping the bottle in a cool, dark place. Heat and sunlight break down the composition of the fragrance, changing the scent and weakening its strength. We recommend keeping your scent in the fridge—or at the very least, outside of the bathroom.

You can create your custom fragrance in person at any of our scent studios located in NYC, DC, and Boston here or craft it from the comfort of your home starting Explorer Box. Looking for the perfect gift for a loved one? Check out our gift bottles and In-Studio Gift Set.
